Preparing for care

What to expect from referral to consultation

New consultations are arranged only after the clinic receives and reviews a written referral from a physician or nurse practitioner. The clinic will contact you when scheduling information is available.

Your referral journey

Four clear steps

1. Referral sentYour physician or nurse practitioner submits the referral and relevant records.
2. Clinical reviewThe clinic reviews scope, completeness, urgency and virtual-care suitability.
3. Appointment arrangedThe clinic contacts you with scheduling and connection instructions.
Prepare for the virtual visit

Simple preparation improves the consultation

Your location

You must be physically located in Ontario at the time of the consultation.

Privacy

Choose a quiet, reasonably private setting where you are comfortable discussing personal health information.

Medication list

Have an up-to-date list of prescriptions, non-prescription medications and supplements available.

Technology

Use a reliable device and internet or telephone connection. Follow the clinic’s instructions before the visit.

During and after the consultation

The physician will review your medical concern, clarify relevant history and discuss an assessment and plan. A consultation report is sent to the referring clinician. Additional testing, follow-up, in-person examination or referral to another service may be recommended.

Virtual care is not appropriate in every situation. Consistent with CPSO expectations, an in-person or hospital-based pathway will be recommended when it is needed for safe and effective care.

Referral-based specialist care across Ontario

Referring clinicians may submit relevant clinical information through the clinic’s referral pathway.
